Citation tracking
Also known as: AI citation tracking, brand citation monitoring
Citation tracking is the operational discipline of monitoring how often and where your brand is mentioned in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, and Google AI Overviews. Unlike traditional rank tracking (position 1-100), citation tracking measures binary presence — yes/no — and citation position within the answer, per priority query, per platform.
Why it’s needed
Traditional rank trackers (SEMrush, Ahrefs, Conductor) don’t yet capture AI engine citations in depth. A brand can rank #3 organically and still be invisible in ChatGPT’s answer for the same query. Citation tracking surfaces this gap.
Tooling landscape in 2026
| Tool | Coverage |
|---|---|
| Profound | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Overviews |
| Otterly | ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini |
| Athena HQ | ChatGPT, Perplexity, multiplatform |
| SEMrush/Ahrefs | Basic AI Overview tracking (shallow) |
| Manual sampling | 5 platforms, gold standard for accuracy |
Minimum-viable measurement
- 30 priority queries sampled weekly across all 5 AI engines
- Log per query: cited yes/no, position in citation list, format of citation
- Track over time to identify rising/falling citation rates per query
- Correlate citation changes with content/entity changes you make
What good looks like
A mid-enterprise brand running AI Search Optimization in 2026 typically targets:
- 40-60% citation rate on priority B2B research queries (ChatGPT)
- 30-50% citation rate on Perplexity (Reddit-weighted, harder)
- 50-70% citation rate on AI Overviews (when top-5 organic)
