Visibility index
Also known as: Sistrix visibility index, visibility score
A visibility index is a composite metric that aggregates a site's rankings across thousands of tracked keywords into a single normalized score. Sistrix's Visibility Index is the most-cited example in European SEO; Semrush, Ahrefs, and Moz each publish their own variants. The metric is useful for tracking overall site visibility trend over time and benchmarking against competitors — but specific score values are tool-specific and not directly comparable across tools.
How the Sistrix Visibility Index is calculated
The methodology (simplified):
- Sistrix tracks rankings for ~1M+ keywords per market
- Each (domain, keyword) pair gets a score based on position + search volume
- The domain’s total score is its raw visibility
- Normalization places the score on a comparable scale
Each tool uses its own formula, keyword set, and weighting — but the conceptual pattern is similar.
Why visibility indices are useful
- Tracks overall trajectory at a glance — visibility curve up = winning across many queries; visibility curve down = something broke
- Catches catastrophic events early — algorithm hit, indexing issue, manual action; the visibility line drops sharply within 1-2 weeks
- Benchmarks vs competitors — comparing your curve to 3-5 competitors shows market context
What visibility indices DON’T capture
- Whether the visibility is on profitable queries — high score on irrelevant keywords is hollow
- Conversion / revenue value — visibility isn’t pipeline
- Local / personalized SERPs — the index uses snapshot SERPs, not personalized
- AI search citation rate — visibility indices are SERP-based; they miss AI Overview citations
A complete reporting stack uses visibility index AS ONE LAYER alongside share of voice on priority queries + traffic + conversion data.
Sistrix vs Semrush vs Ahrefs
| Tool | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Sistrix | European market depth, transparent methodology | Smaller US keyword pool than competitors |
| Semrush | Largest US keyword universe, integrated workflow | Methodology less transparent |
| Ahrefs | Strong backlink integration with rankings data | Visibility metric is newer, less established |
| Moz | Long history (Domain Authority adjacent) | Smaller keyword pool than the leaders |
How to use visibility indices in reporting
- Headline trend in monthly client reports (with caveat)
- Quarterly competitive context — your trend vs 3-5 named competitors
- Diagnostic for catastrophic events — sudden drops trigger investigation
- NEVER report in isolation — pair with priority-query rankings + traffic + conversion
Resocial perspective
We use Sistrix Visibility Index in monthly reports as the macro-trend metric, paired with per-priority-query position tracking and pipeline-attribution data. The visibility line tells the macro story; the priority-query detail tells the actionable story. Never one without the other.
